"Return of Shorty"
TR and dog
Oil, 12x16"
Price on request

In 1905 Theodore Roosevelt went on a bear hunt in Colorado. His guides were experienced in working with dogs and brought a pack of 26 hounds and four half-blood terriers.

My painting shows one of the dogs, Shorty, walking into TR’s camp at night. The dog had returned, badly injured, under it own steam.

What happened to Shorty and his desperate struggle for survival is covered in a compelling account in Volume II of Seerey-Lester’s book Legends of the Hunt – Campfire Tales.
