The flap to the tent was slightly open, as the night was warm. A man lay injured on a cot, and a lion, determined to reclaim its quarry, was prowling 'round the tent.

Every now and then, the lion’s massive head appeared at the opening, seemingly unwavering in its desire to snatch the dying man.

The year was 1899 and the place was British East Africa. What had happened to the man and what would happen next will be told in volume II of Seerey-Lester’s book Legends of the Hunt – Campfire Tales, due out in 2012.
