A highly respected and important member
of Theodore Roosevelts 1909 East African Safari was Dr.
Mearns. Besides being one of the safaris naturalists, he
undertook most of the taxidermy.
Mearns was formerly an army surgeon and
during the yearlong adventure, his surgical skills would also
be in demand.
The painting depicts the doctor, sitting
in a trophy tent, probably at the buffalo camp by the Kamiti
River.
The doctors hard work under difficult
conditions is well documented in Volume II of Seerey-Lesters
book, Legends of the Hunt Campfire Tales, scheduled
for publication in 2012.
