"The Trophy Tent"
Oil, 12x16"
Price on request

A highly respected and important member of Theodore Roosevelt’s 1909 East African Safari was Dr. Mearns. Besides being one of the safari’s naturalists, he undertook most of the taxidermy.

Mearns was formerly an army surgeon and during the yearlong adventure, his surgical skills would also be in demand.

The painting depicts the doctor, sitting in a trophy tent, probably at the buffalo camp by the Kamiti River.

The doctor’s hard work under difficult conditions is well documented in Volume II of Seerey-Lester’s book, Legends of the Hunt – Campfire Tales, scheduled for publication in 2012.
