This painting is based on an actual event, although I’ve taken some artistic license in my interpretation. It involved the famous white hunter Bill Judd, and his son Jack who were tracking a large bull elephant, and had been for several days. There is an inconsistent breeze and the hunters are wary of not being upwind of their prize. To check the wind direction Jack would periodically take handfuls of wood ash from his shoulder bag and throw it in the air to see which way the floating ash would drift.

The breeze had now steadied so the hunters decided to press on. But as they emerged from a thicket they found themselves in a lagger (dry creek), at somewhat of a disadvantage, looking up at the elephant, which was just ahead of them. The elephant had now stopped and they wondered if it was aware of their presence, but this question was soon answered as the big tusker turned and showed the preliminary stages of a threat display. As the massive animal moved to within stomping distance, Bill raised his rifle, at his sons urging, to “shoot!” Sadly despite several shots the elephant trampled and gored Bill, killing him. Jack having witnessed his father’s death, desperately tried to shoot the rampaging elephant, which he eventually brought down with a side brain shot from just a few feet away. Jack never hunted again.
