As the light begins to disappear on a
Tanganyika savannah, four lionesses stand silently assessing
the distant camp.
The hunters have traveled a long way
from Nairobi, and after many days they have crossed the border
from British East Africa to the German controlled Tanganyika.
They traveled by horse and oxen cart over some of the roughest
terrain, and have come to ride lions in one of the best hunting
areas in Africa, the Serengeti Plains.
But this is not only the end of the day,
it is also the end of peace in this area, and the hunting party
will have to return to British East Africa very soon. It is 1914
and it is the twilight of an era, for the First-World War is
about to break out and this border region will soon be a battle-ground
of a different kind.
