"Young Blood"
10x8 Oil on Panel

This study
is inspired by Hugh Cholmondeley, the third Baron Delamere. This
diminutive hot-tempered Eton drop out was one of many young bloods
who came to hunt in British East Africa during Queen Victorias
reign. Later many came back between 1900 and 1914 as settlers.
Lord Delamere, like so many of
his cohorts, got a bad reputation as a heavy drinking carouser,
but he also gained much respect and admiration from the early
colonists as a brave lion hunter. He would return time and time
again to hunt big game before he found his "Elderado"
in the highlands of what is now central Kenya. Here he eventually
made his life. Credited by many with coining the name "White
Hunter" when he first employed Alan Black, his reputation
remains in high regard as does his estate today.
