"Sundowner"
Oil on Canvas Panel 10x20
SOLD
There is
nothing quite like an African sunset. As the sounds of the day
are slowly quelled by the setting sun, a far off lion roars,
and distant elephants clash tusks as they play fight. It is 1913
in Tanganyika (later Tanzania)and there is another sound, the
gathering rumble of war on the equator. This is also a time before
the ivory trade had been restricted.
It is doubtful that the ivory hunters
in my painting, partaking of a sundowner before dinner, are discussing
the inevitable outbreak of war. More likely they are recounting
todays hunt. Outside of bagging a big tusker, this is perhaps
the most rewarding time of the day for this white hunter and
his clients.
